Harper Rivers is the assistant chief of medicine at The Rivers, a hospital founded by her ancestors in the early 1900s, and Presley is an executor with SunView, a conglomerate the hospital board sold the hospital to without informing any of the staff.A wonderful frenemies to lovers LGBTQ+ novel set in the gorgeous Hudson River area in a small community made up mostly of farming families, Against Drs Orders pits Harper and Presley against each other from day one of Presley's arrival. Presley makes assumptions about the efficacy of having small town doctors who still make house calls, believing that if patients could be re-routed to urgent care centers they would receive better, cheaper care. Harper is concerned that the only reason Presley is there is to shut down her hospital, and force a large portion of employees to find other work in an uncertain time.When both women realize their attraction, they spend a long time trying to stay away from each other, before realizing that avoidance is only strengthening the desire they feel.A wonderful 5⭐ slow burn love story mixed with the fast paced nature of a hospital setting, and a city girl trying to fight her attraction, not only to a simple country doctor, but for the whole town and way of life. The build up and meat and potatoes of this book were fantastic, par for the course for what I expect from Radclyffe. The ending felt like it could have been fleshed out a bit more, it was a bit abrupt.One minute we're wondering how they're gonna make this work, and the next suddenly everything is fixed. I think just a couple more chapters of Presley figuring things out, or maybe just a single chapter of her acknowledging her feelings. Maybe a scene with her family so we get to experience her struggle there and not hear about it secondhand.I'm still giving this book five stars because it's well worth the read, and a solid story despite my criticisms. It's not my favorite Radclyffe book, but it definitely not my least favorite either. I'd still recommend it, and since I saw that one of my favorite narrators does the next book in the series I'll be hopping over to audible to get that one.
