Book Again the Magic (The Wallflowers) Review :

3 1/2 stars---Primary romance is Aline & McKenna. Secondary plotline is start of her sister, Livia & her lover Gideon.Aline's has stayed in love with her childhood friend, McKenna. But 12 years ago she deliberately lied about her feelings to push him away for his own protection. After making his fortune abroad, McKenna is unable to forget the hateful words that sent him away and returns for revenge. Aline realizes his vengeful motive but cannot resist him. She is tempted to tell him truth of her feelings and reason for deceit. Unfortunately she is terrified of revealing another secret- an incident which left her scarred and insecure.Livia (younger sister) plays pivotal role in both plotlines. From her, McKenna learned truth ofAline's hurtful actions that drove him to leave. However Livia will not reveal secret that keeps Aline from admitting her love.Aline struggles with the revelation due to insecurity. Her fears lead to her repeating past actions and driving him away with ugly words. At last moment she pursues him, finally finding courage to be honest. HEA shortly follows.Shortfalls of story are all related to Aline's character. Although to protect McKenna, she initiated separation with hurtful lies. Then she repeats past actions because of secret fears. Her angst, insecurities carry on so long that I lost sympathy for her plight. In the end I wondered (as did the hero) how Alina could doubt his love.At his immediate forgiveness, McKenna's faith in Aline seemed to surpass her's in him. Unfortunately, I felt it also surpassed what she deserved.I do look forward to reading more about Livia's romance. In comparison, she seemed more honest, courageous, and likable than her sister.
The premise and the beginning had so much potential.... then it just got stupid. I can't stand when there is that one issue that the heroine believes makes her incapable of being loved and it actually isn't THAT big a deal- not to risk all of your future happiness and that of someone you love. The beginning was romantic, and I usually love a star-crossed lovers theme, but I feel like the sweet chemistry between the two is instantly destroyed by all the unrealistic trysts where she won't show her legs. I also disliked the side story of her sister- I personally feel like that's a cop out on the part of character development - you either have enough to say about the main couple to write a book about them or you don't. I can see how some people would love this, but I've seen the wrong side of the tracks guy done much, much better. I also thought the brother's attitude towards his sisters' sexually doings was too progressive for the times to be believable.
